Theatre ke Bhoole Hue Rang

The modern Indian theatre owes much to the western tradition of drama in the shaping of its present forms of expression and technique, but still it is deeply rooted in the native experience of the dramatic art and has evolved out of the folk and other forms of theatrical performance, including swang, ras-lila, nautanki, and Parsi theatre where literature, music, dance and dramatic representation merge to stage an explosion of a complex artistic experience.

The panelists who include leading icons from the world of theatre, both performers and academics, would share their views on the earlier and generally forgotten forms of theatre and what they meant to those who practiced and enjoyed them.

DURAAYE NAINA BANAYE BATIYAN: KHUSRO KI KARISHMA-KAARI

Abdul Hasan Yameenuddin, better known as Amir Khusro was the Indian genius who laid the foundations of the composite Indo-Islamic culture in the 13th century. A Sufi soldier, courtier, poet and music maestro, all at the same time. A polyglot who invented a new language by fusing the Persian with many Indian languages, which came to be known Hindavi at his time and developed into ‘Urdu’ as we know it today. The great Persian poet as he was, he also wrote poetry in Hindavi that paved the way for the Urdu ghazal-poetry. He also experimented with other forms of Hindavi poetry like Paheli (riddles), Kah-Mukarni etc. In the field of music, Amir Khusro is known to have invented two musical instruments – Tabla and Sitar and also composed many ragas as well as created Khayal, Tarana and Qawaali forms of vocal music.

Prof. Gopi Chand Narang, one of the most prominent literary critic and intellectual who is an authority on Amir Khusro would enlighten us on the many splendored creative miracles of Amir Khusro.

MAQBOOL-E-AAM ADAB YA ADAB KA QUBOOL-E-AAM

There has been a long drawn-out debate on what is the difference between the serious and popular literature and how a line can be drawn between the two. Urdu has a very rich tradition of popular literature, including detective and romantic fiction, that thrived up to the seventh decade of the 20th century in both the countries of the Indian subcontinent, which, however, fell into decline since then.

The panelists in this track would discuss the forms and content of the popular literature produced in Urdu, its readership and literary worth, as also how can it be differentiated from the serious literature.

FIRAQ GORAKHPURI: HIJR KI RAAT KA SITARA

Firaq Gorakhpuri rode as a colossus on India’s literary scene throughout the twentieth century, along with Faiz Ahmad Faiz in Pakistan. He is best known for introducing an element of earthiness to Urdu love poetry where the lovers become living human beings, instead of being shadowy metaphors. He also made a mark as a literary critic and cultural thinker.

Prof. Shamim Hanfi, one of the most prominent literary critics in the subcontinent, who has seen Firaq Gorakhpuri at close quarters and has a deep understanding of his life and work, would make us learn more about the bard’s life struggles and poetic experience.

URDU KA ADAALATI LEHJA

Urdu has been the language of legal and judicial discourse and practice, especially in lower judiciary, throughout the colonial rule in India, after it replaced Persian as the court language. Many eminent judges, lawyers and other judicial functionaries have been poets like Mufti Sadrauddin Azurda in Ghalib’s Delhi and later Akbar Elahabadi, Brij Narayan Chakbast and Anand Narayan Mulla, to name a few.

This track would have eminent judges, jurists and lawyers making us learn much more intimately about how Urdu shaped and impacted the judicial discourse and practice, and also sharing their own experience of the language.

AALAMI BAZAAR MEIN HINDUSTANI ZABAANEIN

There is a growing realization among Indian authors that despite very high quality literature being written in different Indian languages, it fails to get due recognition, not only globally but in its own country as well, as the colonial legacy of the West and western literature being essentially dominant still continues in the rapidly globalizing world. This state of language-politics has found a very perceptive analysis in the post-colonial discourse.

The panelists who include eminent authors in Urdu, Hindi and English would dwell at length on the debate as it has evolved from the colonial era to our own time, and discuss what could be done to make a meaningful and effective intervention.

GHALIB, HALI AND URDU RENAISSANCE

The great poet that he was, Mirza Ghalib was also a great visionary, who is considered to be the first among Urdu moderns. His exceptionally sharp intellect led him to have an intuition of the material and intellectual changes that were lurking on the horizon under the impact of new knowledge and technology coming from the West, as early as the third decade of the 19th century. His vision must have been instrumental in leading his disciple, poet and critic Altaf Husain Hali and others including Mohd. Husain Azad towards a thorough review of the state of Urdu poetry and literary culture, and introduce new ideas and structures of thought, thereby setting in motion a process of literary and intellectual reconstruction that turned out to be a movement we now call the Urdu renaissance.

The panelists in the track would enlighten the audience on the intellectual influence of Mirza Ghalib and the contributions made by Hali and other Urdu modernists in reshaping the literary and intellectual narrative.
